Free style nunchaku is all about creativity and personal expression. It can involve juggling with the nunchaku or performing a demonstration that showcases skill, rhythm and control. Many practitioners enjoy demonstrating their abilities to family and friends — to entertain, to inspire, or simply to share their passion.
Just like dancing, freestyle nunchaku should feel natural and relaxed. It is a free form of expression with the nunchaku and can easily be performed to music. There are no strict rules or fixed styles. It is not limited to a specific martial art system or principles such as Circle 1, The Law of the Circle, or other technical requirements. Everyone is free to explore their own style and creativity.
This freedom often leads to the most creative and unique performances. Everyone can show their own talents — and sometimes their shortcomings as well; the internet is full of blooper videos where things do not always go as planned.
Freestyle nunchaku performances can range from entertaining circus-style acts to impressive martial arts demonstrations. Watching a well-performed routine is always inspiring. In fact, it is something that both children and adults can enjoy. Practicing with the nunchaku creates a feeling of freedom and playfulness. Not only for children, but also for adult practitioners — it should always feel natural and enjoyable.
Things change slightly when freestyle nunchaku becomes part of a competition. In that case, rules and judging criteria are introduced so a jury can fairly evaluate the performance. Judges may look at aspects such as:
Judges may also give penalty points for dropping the nunchaku, failing to recover it smoothly, or interruptions during the performance. Ideally, judging should be done by an independent jury. A martial arts background is not always required, although it is common. Any experienced viewer can recognize a performance that is impressive, respectful and well executed. At the same time, judges with a specific martial arts background may evaluate from their own perspective. A diverse jury can therefore create a more balanced and fair result. If the focus is strictly martial arts, judging can also be based on traditional budo qualities, similar to how kata or martial arts demonstrations are evaluated.
