Introduction
Long ago, people fought only for the most basic needs: food, water, warmth, and shelter. They hunted, worked, and sometimes defended themselves just to survive. Fighting was not a choice it was necessary. Today, we don’t have to fight for survival anymore; we no longer need to hunt for food or defend our homes every day. Yet we still practice martial arts. Why? Because the fight has changed. Now we train not just to defend ourselves physically, but also to grow stronger mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
We learn to face the challenges of life, to discipline ourselves, and to walk the path the Do-Tao of Bushido with respect and awareness.
The Cliffhanger
You are being chased through the jungle by a hungry tiger.
You grab your backpack and leap from a rock.
You catch hold of a vine.
But below, another hungry tiger waits for you.
You cannot climb back up, and you cannot go down.
Meanwhile, two little mice one white, one black start nibbling at your vine.
Then, you see a beautiful flower growing on the rock wall.
This story is an old Eastern teaching. It has been told to students for centuries to make them think about their own path, their own struggles, and their own choices. In martial arts, we still use it today because the jungle of life has not disappeared, it only looks different.
Food for thought
Martial arts is more than just fighting techniques it is a powerful tool to walk your Tao or Do. It helps you train your body, sharpen your mind, and strengthen your spirit so you can stay on your path, even when life becomes as wild and confusing as a jungle. Think of it like playing a challenging video game: the better you train, the better your skills, and the more prepared you are to survive the levels and win. By practicing martial arts, you increase your chances to make it through life with honor, balance, and strength and to truly enjoy the flower you find along the way. What about you? Will you train to walk your Do?
Reflection questions
How can martial arts help you stay calm and focused when life feels chaotic?
Which “tiger” (past or future) do you feel chasing you?
What “flower” in your life can you already enjoy today?
What does your Do look like right now? And where do you want it to lead?
