The Five Filters

Think before you share  the story of the five filters In a high school WhatsApp group, messages are flying in. Jokes, memes, but also... gossip. One day, someone types in a rush: “Omg, I heard something really bad about Jamie! I have to tell you all! ”Before anyone reacts, Sam  the quiet, thoughtful one  replies: “Hold up. Before you send that... have you run it through the five filters? ”The group goes silent for a moment.

“Five filters? Wtf are you talking about?” Sam explains: “Think before you click or send. Check these first:”

  1. Is it true? Have you verified it, or is it just something you heard?
  2. Is it useful? Does it really add value to the conversation, or is it just drama?
  3. Is it necessary? Do you really need to share this, or is it better left unsaid?
  4. Is it kind? How would you feel if someone shared something like this about you?
  5. Is it safe? Could it hurt, shame, or even endanger someone?

The sender pauses. “Whoa… No. Actually, it doesn’t pass any of those. ”Sam replies: “Then maybe it’s better not to send it. Show the same respect online as you would in real life. ”From that day on, the group follows one golden rule:

Food for Thought:

“Respect is not optional even behind a screen.” Be wise with your words. Online is still real life.
