Mask of trust

The teacher started his lesson and said:

"So, who can you trust? Usually your parents, your closest friends, your family. Even then, not 100% because even your mom tells you that sweater looks good when you look like a walking tomato. And online? Trust? Forget it. You never know who’s really behind that screen a gamer, an 83-year-old grandpa, or a cat walking on a keyboard." Then he told this story:

"There was once a girl. On Instagram, Snapchat, and in class she always seemed happy and strong. Her mask was perfect. But at home, in her room, she often cried. One day her mom noticed and asked: ‘What’s wrong?’  The girl said:  ‘Everyone thinks I’m always cheerful, but I can never really be myself.’  Her mother hugged her and said: ‘You don’t have to show your true face to everyone. But here at home, you can take your mask off    we love you anyway.’  They cried a little together  and it felt good.

"The teacher looked around the class and smiled:

"Online? Keep that mask on, better safe than sorry. But with the ones really close to you? Take it off sometimes. It feels better. "Then he added: "And yeah, I know what you’re all thinking: ‘Oh sir, I also want to cry with you because I trust you so much.’ Well, too bad  I forgot my tissues!"

Food for thought:

  • Who really deserves to see your true face?
  • Who do you trust enough to take off your mask?
  • And online? Always assume: it’s just a mask.
  • Who are you talking to online? Are you really sure?
