The Ninja’s Test
An old ninja master went on a nightly mission with his young student. They sneaked into a large house. The master whispered to his student: "Go into that big closet and see if there’s anything valuable inside."As the student crawled into the closet, the master suddenly slammed the door shut, turned the key, and began shouting loudly and stomping on the floor as if he had been discovered. Then he vanishedsilently into the night. The owner of the house, awakened by the noise, took a candle and called his servants together. Together they searched the house, room by room. The young ninja sat trapped in the closet, desperate and with a pounding heart. When he made a small noise, he heard the people gathering in front of the closet. The owner turned the key… At that moment, the student jumped out of the closet in a flash, blew out the candle, and fled into the darkness. In the confusion, the people bumped into each other and angrily chased after him. The student ran to the harbor, the pursuers close behind him. There he gained a small lead, spotted a large stone, and had an idea. He rolled the stone into the water so it sounded as if someone had jumped, and quietly disappeared in the opposite direction. Behind him, he heard the people shouting: "He jumped into the water, search for him there! "When he finally returned to his master’s house, exhausted, he told him what had happened.The master nodded with satisfaction and said: "You have passed your test. Now you are ready to be a true ninja."
